Homes lost in fires

No one was injured during two fires Saturday in Greenfield, but the homes were heavily damaged in the separate blazes.

According to Branden Jackman, public information officer for Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District, firefighters responded to 9945 SR 753 south at 1:16 a.m. on Saturday and arrived to a “fully engulfed” structure fire.

He said Patrick Baughn owns the home and the family was not there when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire, Jackman said, is undetermined but is not believed to be suspicious.

The home is a total loss and little remains of the structure.

Paint Creek responded to a second fire Saturday at 9:38 p.m. at 431 Spring St. and upon arrival found “heavy fire” in the front of the house.

The home, owned by Tracey Pointer who was not home when the fire erupted, was deemed to have not been a total loss structurally, but all contents were lost in the blaze, Jackman said.

The fire’s cause remains undetermined, but is not believed to have suspicious origins, Jackman said. The state fire marshal’s office is investigating.

Even with the seeming spate of fires, with the two on Saturday and another on Dec. 7 that damaged a home on Cameron Drive, Jackman said the district has seen a decrease in the amount of fires over the last several months.

Typically, Jackman said, this time of year brings an “upkick” in fires caused by heating sources when the weather has turned colder, but this year has been “uncommon” in that regard with the unseasonably warm weather.

The overall decrease in fires across the district could be due to a number of factors, he said, like the weather, the district’s fire prevention campaigns, and people being more mindful about safety.

Paint Creek was assisted on both the SR 753 and Spring Street fire scenes by the Highland County North Joint Fire and Ambulance District out of Leesburg and Wayne Township in Fayette County. The Greenfield Police Department also assisted on the Spring Street scene.
