Terry Britton was re-elected as president and Bill Myers was elected vice president when the Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education held its annual organizational meeting Wednesday.

Britton and Myers were the only board members nominated for either position and both were voted in unanimously. Both were sworn in to their positions by treasurer Adam Zink. Britton was also sworn in for his second term, along with newly-elected member Tom Milbery.

Britton was re-elected and Milbery was elected in November when three people ran for two open seats on the board.

The board also voted to continue to hold its regular meetings at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at the board office at 39 Willetsville Pike.

The next regular meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20.

The board voted to pay itself the maximum rate allowed by law of $125 per meeting, up to a maximum of 18 meetings per year for members who were already on the board, and an unlimited number of meetings for the members elected in November. Britton said a relatively new law allows school board members to be paid for an unlimited number of meetings each year, while previously they could only be paid for up to 18.

The board approved the new pay system last year, but members on a school board cannot approve raises for themselves during their current term. So, Sam Barnhouse, Beverly Rhoads and Myers can only be paid for up to 18 meetings a year.

It was certified by the board that enrollment at the Hillsboro Schools on Dec. 31, 2015 was 2,550 students, including 63 students (29 seniors and 34 juniors) who attend Laurel Oaks.

Superintendent Jim Smith said those numbers were down a bit because the school district has had some students leave the district since the beginning of the year.

A year ago the board certified figures that showed 2,538 students enrolled in the district, including 58 (25 seniors and 33 juniors) attending Laurel Oaks.

The board appointed the following members to various board committees: finance – Rhoads, Myers; policy – Barnhouse, Britton.

The following board members were appointed to the various superintendent committees: Ohio School Board legislative liaison – Milbery; Great Oaks representative – Rhoads; American Disability Act – Barnhouse; Southwest Regional Board – Rhoads; Business Advisory – Rhoads, alternate Myers; Athletic Council – Britton, Myers; HEA and OAPSE liaison – Milbery; Wellness – Milbery and student representative Emily Burwinkel; Community relations – Milberry, Britton; and Technology – Myers.
