Senior Nutrition Program March for Meals Campaign

The Highland County Community Action Organization, Inc. (HCCAO) Senior Nutrition Program has announced that it will participate in the national 2016 March for Meals campaign. HCCAO’s Senior Nutrition Program March for Meals event will be March 18-24 and will include daily activities and prize drawings along with special entertainment throughout the week.

The week is also Community Champions Week, a volunteer effort among local county and state officials to bring awareness to senior hunger. Community Champions will help prepare, deliver or serve meals along with the Senior Nutrition Program staff.

“In this tough economy, the food and human contact we provide to seniors in this community is needed more than ever,” said Julia Wise, executive director of HCCAO. “We need the community to come out and support our March for Meals events. Our clients are counting on us. We still have over 40 seniors on a waiting list to get home delivered meals. The organization is seeking groups or individuals to sponsor our seniors.”

March for Meals is a national campaign held during the month of March, initiated and sponsored by the Meals On Wheels Association of America to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of local communities. Hundreds of Senior Nutrition Programs across the United States, like the HCCAO Senior Nutrition Program, promote March for Meals.

Area businesses who have sponsored or donated items towards the campaign include Adena Regional Medical Center, Blossom n Buds, Corner Health Mart Pharmacy, Crestwood Care Center, Cundiff’s Flowers, Edgewood Manor, Hearth & Care Nursing Home, Highland District Hospital, Home Helpers, Robin’s Village Florist, Stewart’s Pharmacy, The Laurels of Hillsboro and Walgreens.

The HCCAO, Inc. Senior Nutrition Program site located at 1230 Greenhills Drive, Greenfield, (across from the Greenfield Library off of Jefferson Street) is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Seniors, 60 years of age and older, can come into the site for a nutritious meal. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. Transportation is provided for seniors living within the Greenfield village limits.

The Senior Nutrition Program also delivers meals countywide to adults 60 years of age or older. For many seniors, the meal which they receive is the only meal they have to eat all day. For other seniors, the driver is the only person they see all week. This program provides home delivered meals daily throughout Highland County to over 130 seniors.
