Lady Mustangs are District Champs

The 2015-2016 Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs (24-1) are District Champions and Hannah Binkley has joined the 1,000 point club, and it all happened on the same day.

The Lady Mustangs headed to Waverly High School on Saturday afternoon looking to keep their hot streak alive as they faced off against Fairland. As the Lady Mustangs are prone to do with a break between games, they came out a little sluggish but at the end of the fourth quarter, the Lynchburg girls had turned things around, winning the ball game 48-33.

Lynchburg came into the game riding an 11 game win streak and were looking to keep that streak alive with another win. As mentioned before, the Lady Mustangs came out a little sluggish, making some bad passes and simple mistakes. Fairfield was actually able to jump out to an eight point lead before the Lady Mustangs scored their first basket at the 4:58 mark with a bucket from Peyton Scott. The girls were able to pick up their game a little in the remaining time and at the end of the first quarter it was a tie game at 12 a piece.

In the second quarter, scoring for both teams fell off just slightly, but the Lady Mustangs were able to hold the advantage with an 8-7 eight minutes to lead at halftime 20-19.

You could tell as soon as the third quarter started, that the Lady Mustangs had found their footing. Lynchburg came out and showed the Fairland crowd what they really had. With both levels of bleachers in the Waverly gym almost full and a packed student section for Lynchburg, the cheering and chanting became very one sided as the Lady Mustangs started to pull away from their opponent and never looked back. They added seven seven points to their lead at the end of the third with a score of 36-28 and added that same amount to their lead in the fourth to go on to win by 15 points with a final of 48-33.

The other big moment of the game came with 5:55 left in the final quarter. Coming into the game, Hannah Binkley needed just 11 points to reach her 1,000th. At 5:55 in the fourth, Binkley found a way to make that happen as she scored her 11th and 12th point of the game, placing her in the 1,000 point club with 1,001.

“It was really exciting,” said Hannah Binkley after the game of her accomplishment. “I set a goal at the beginning of the season to make it to this moment but I thought for sure I’d be waiting until next year to get it. What makes it even better is on the same day, we are able to win a district championship. I want to thank my teammates and my family for all their support. I would have never been able to do this without all of them.”

“This is out first district win since 2003,” said Whitney Lewis after the win. Our girls came out ready to play. We’ve been preparing all week for this. We came out a little jittery in the first quarter played really good after that. the second half was the difference today. Our defense held them. Our defense has kept us in a lot of ball games. We had a lot of contributions from everyone coming off the bench. Lexi Waits had a heck of a game with a lot of energy. Ali Little had a great game down in the post making some moves for us. This was an overall team win and I couldn’t be more excited for our program and Lynchburg.

The Lady Mustangs move on to the regional semi finals on Wednesday, March 2 at 8 p.m. at Logan High School. They will play either W. Layayette Ridgewood or Sugarcreek Garaway.
