The Whiteoak Wildcats baseball team split their opening weekend on the road this Saturday with a win and a loss against non-league opponent South Webster.

After losing the opening game to South Webster 11-1, the Wildcats bounced back in game two to fight for a 3-2 victory.

That victory came in most part to an excellent pitching outing by Trevor Martin who went all seven innings allowing just one hit and two runs, neither of them earned, while striking out seven and walking just two. Martin aided his outing with two hits at the plate which included a double and collected an RBI.

Brandon Lowe, Jacob Burns, Kyle Marler, Austin Lewis, Joey Oliver and Chase Carraher all collected one hit a piece and for Burns, Marler and Oliver those hits were doubles. Burns, Martin and Oliver all collected one RBI a piece in the game.

“Trevor Martin pitched an impressive game,” said Wildcats Head Coach Chris Veidt. “He got stronger as he went, adjusted and found a consistent breaking ball, and stayed within a low pitch count. Perhaps the most impressive part of his performance was the way he finished. He had a four pitch sixth inning and then closed out the game by striking out the side in the seventh.

“As a team we were very impressive from the aspect of being able to come back from an uncharacteristic game one and beat a quality opponent in a great high school baseball game. Being successful in this game is all about handling the negativity that this game can bring and we did that in an impressive fashion. We also were impressive offensively with eight hits, including four doubles.”

The Whiteoak baseball team will play their home opener, which will also be their league opener on Tuesday, March 29 against West Union starting at 5 p.m.
