The Lady Lions softball team (11-2) had their offense and defense firing on all cylinders on Tuesday night as they came away with a 12-0 run-rule win over North Adams.
The Lady Lions tallied 10 hits in the win with two of those hits being multi-run homeruns. Kourtnie Smith added another homer to resume with a deep shot that scored two runs in the third inning of the game and Lauren Arnold hit a three-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete the run-rule scoring the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth runs.
The only slow inning of the night for the Fairfield Lady Lions was the very first when they managed to bring four batters to the plate and even threatened briefly as Grace Larrick made it to third base before North Adams was able to get the final out. Smith led off the second inning with one of her three hits on the night and would later score. The Lady Lions took a 3-0 lead by the end of the second. In the third, the Lady Lions added three more to their total as Emily Williams reached base on an error and then Smith brought her home with the deep ball over the fence. Arnold stepped into the box right after Smith and hit a double and later scored to bring the score to 6-0 at the end of the third inning.
In the fourth inning, Kaiti White led the inning off by reaching first base on an error and Kourtnie Smith drew a walk. Up next, Arnold batted them both home with a double to bring the Lady Lions’ total to 8-0.
In the fifth inning, all the Fairfield girls had to do was to get two more runs across the plate for the fifth inning run-rule. Lyndee Spargur led the inning off with a single and was able to get to second later in the inning, but that was all she would get as the inning ended with Spargur stranded at second and the Lady Lions back in the field to hold the North Adams team.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kaiti White led the inning off with a single and was able to get to second as Emily Williams reached first on a fielding error. Smith was up next and knocked a single to drive in a run to make the score 9-0 in favor of Fairfield. Lauren Arnold stepped into the batters box next with runners on first and second. She blasted a ball over top of the centerfielder at the fence for a three-run home run to make the game 12-0 and give the Lady Lions the run-rule win in six innings.
White picked up another win on the mound for the Lady Lions going the distance in the game and throwing a one-hit shutout with a total of four strikeouts.
Leading Fairfield at the plate was Smith with a 3-for-3 effort with the homerun and scoring four times; Arnold was 3-for-4 with the walk-off, three-run homerun as well as two doubles and scored twice; White was 2-for-3 with a SAC and scored twice; Spargur went 2-for-3 and scored once and Williams crossed the plate twice as well.
“We’ve had a great start to the week,” said Head Coach Mark Dettwiller after the win. “We’re really young but the girls are really starting to gel. We’re getting the little things done that we need to get done to be successful.
“North Adams is a good team and their pitcher is an All-State pitcher. We were just lucky enough to put the ball in play and hit it hard a couple times. Now we go down there tomorrow night.”
The Lady Lions will match up against North Adams again on Wednesday, April 20 and the game will be played at North Adams starting at 5 p.m.
