The Hillsboro Garden Club met April 26 at the Kathryn Zane Granger Floral Hall for a short business meeting prior to its annual spring plant auction. President Nancy Baldwin presided with 15 members attending.

Beryl Gruelle displayed a modern Shoka oriental design. The design depicted a serene body of water featuring a larger grouping of variegated iris foliage and blue and pink bluebells accompanied by a smaller grouping of the same flowers. The arrangements resided in a low water-filled container. One could almost imagine tiny fish darting among the islands of greenery.

Items discussed were repainting the showroom at Floral Hall, preparation for the Highland County Fair flower shows, and participation in the upcoming Region 16 meeting on May 12. The meeting was then adjourned, and refreshments were provided by Andrea Schneider and Arlene Huiet.

Following the meeting the club’s Spring Plant Sale was held with Beryl Gruelle acting as auctioneer. A large variety of plants and garden goodies were available to the highest bidders. Among the offerings were hellebores, variegated iris, euphorbia, ornamental grasses of many types, canna bulbs, veronicas, painted daisy, lilies of the valley, cornflowers and black-eyed susans as well as tomato plants, many herbs, gorgeous hanging baskets in full bloom, bamboo plants, houseplants and decorative pots, vases and birdhouses. There were even gardening hats for sale. Happy buyers went home with armloads of plants and plans for the days ahead.
