Nutrition topic of Hillsboro Women’s Club

Twenty-four members and one guest of the Hillsboro Woman’s Club were enlightened on the subject of nutrition at the club’s May meeting.

Nutritionist Frances Larkin was the program presenter. She spoke, first, in general, on the lack of adequate food supplies and the limited choices for many. Even so, 30 to 40 percent of the available food is wasted in most countries, but European countries are striving to improve, she said.

Larkin explained the relationship of food to health, defining organic foods, food additives (both intentional and accidental) and touched on natural ingredients, probiotics, gluten, antioxidants and genetically modified organisms or GMOs. The advertising of food products makes intelligent selection confusing due to the lack of regulations, she explained.

Following a lively question and answer session, a brief business meeting was conducted by club president Mary Todd Hardeman. She opened with a lovely tribute to mothers, in honor of Mothers’ Day, and welcomed the newest member of the club, Jane Stowers. She also thanked the hostesses of the meeting and reminded members to sign up for hostess duties for the coming year.

The last club meeting before the summer hiatus will be on June 9 with Vicki Knauff as chairperson, assisted by Toy Fender, Frieda Redkey and Jean Wallis.
