Calling all varsity coaches

Highland County varsity athletic coaches, including cheerleading coaches, are being reminded that the deadline to submit nominations for the 2016 Times-Gazette Highland County Scholar-Athlete Award is Friday, June 3.

Nominees for the award must be a senior from a Highland County high school who has lettered in at least one sport during the 2015-16 school year. Nominations can be made only by head varsity coaches who coached the nominee during the current school year. Coaches can nominate one student-athlete for each sport they coached.

The nominations should include the student-athletes’ name, school, cumulative grade point average, number of letters won during their high school years and senior year, accomplishments both academically and athletically, and community service achievements.

The entries are judged primarily on the coaches’ nomination, so coaches are encouraged to include as much information as possible about the student-athlete.

The athletic directors at all five public high schools in Highland County received nomination forms for each coach. If a coach still needs one, they can be requested electronically by emailing Jeff Gilliland at [email protected].

The nominations can be dropped off at the respective school’s athletic director’s office or mailed or dropped off to: The Times-Gazette, ℅ Jeff Gilliland, 108 Gov. Trimble Place, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133, or to the above email address.

The student-athletes and the coaches who nominated them will be the guests of The Times-Gazette at a dinner banquet scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, June 23 at the Ponderosa Banquet Center in Hillsboro.

All the student-athletes will be recognized and will receive an award. One of them will be named the 2016 Times-Gazette Highland County Scholar-Athlete. A $200 scholarship and a plaque goes to the overall winner.

That same evening, the four latest inductees into The Times-Gazette Highland County Athletic Hall of Fame will also be honored, and will be guests of the newspaper.

The banquet, which includes a dinner catered by Ponderosa, is open to the public. Tickets are $16 and can be reserved by calling Jeff Gilliland at 937-402-2522. Reservations should be made so the number of people attending the banquet can be anticipated, but the tickets can be picked and paid for at the door the night of the event.
