Sheriff: Man was stabbed, assaulted

A Highland County man escaped serious injuries after he was lured away from his home early Wednesday morning, then stabbed and assaulted, according to Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera.

The sheriff said that at 1:36 a.m. Wednesday his office received a call from an off-duty Mowrystown police officer stating that Brandon Overstake, 32, had been assaulted, stabbed, and then transported to Highland District Hospital in a private vehicle.

Deputies and detectives went to the hospital to meet with Overstake, who told them the incident took place on Fenwick Road, south of Mowrystown in White Oak Township, according to Barrera. The sheriff also said that Overstake advised officers that he was at home when he heard a car door and went outside. Once outside he was approached by a male subject who said that his vehicle had broken down and that he needed help getting the vehicle off the road.

According to Barrera, Overstake said he went to help the male and was then approached by a second male. The victim said he was then struck in the head and one of the two males started stabbing him.

Overstake made it back to his house and was then transported to the hospital, according to Barrera.

The sheriff said that he believed Overstake was treated and released.

The incident remains under investigation.
