Attacking the ACT


High school juniors and seniors from area school districts wasted no time in getting a head start on planning for college by spending their last Saturday in August attending the Southern Ohio Educational Service Center’s Attacking the ACT workshop presented by Bob Brausch of Tutoring by B2, a former high school math teacher who has dedicated his professional career to empowering learners to reach and exceed their educational goals and achieve their highest potential.

Geared to those students taking the ACT for the first time or looking to raise their previous test scores, the six-hour workshop tackled the three components necessary for successful completion of the ACT: test-taking skills, mental stamina and timing, and ACT content in English, math and science.

According to Curt Bradshaw, coordinator of gifted services with the SOESC, “Our first Attacking the ACT Workshop was a definite success, and I certainly commend the students who dedicated a Saturday of their weekend for ACT prep.”

In speaking with participants at the conclusion of the workshop, Bradshaw said that students spoke very highly of Brausch, the workshop facilitator, and the provided materials.

“I found that the workshop went extremely in depth with each major subject,” said one student on the workshop evaluation form. Another student felt, “getting an inside look at the format, words, etc.” was also beneficial.

The SOESC will host an Attacking the ACT 101 workshop Oct. 1 at the SOESC in Wilmington and again Oct. 8 at the Region 14/Hopewell Center in Hillsboro.

The Attacking the ACT 101 workshop is targeted toward sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have not yet taken the ACT, and juniors and seniors who have taken the ACT, but are still looking to learn the fundamental tips and strategies for succeeding on the ACT assessment, along with opportunities to work on many practice problems.

An Attacking the ACT 102 workshop will be held Saturday, Oct. 15 at the SOESC in Wilmington.

The Attacking the ACT 102 workshop is focused toward juniors and seniors who have advanced past the fundamentals of the ACT, have earned relatively high composite scores on previous ACT administrations, and are looking for additional tips to further boost final composite scores as they work through practice ACT questions at a faster pace.
