Over 100 Highland County Historical Society members and volunteers came out to enjoy the beautiful weather Saturday at the annual Log Cabin Cookout and Appreciation Dinner.

The event serves as a fundraiser and a thank you for those who support the historical society throughout the year. Senator Rob Portman, campaigning in the area, joined the group to tour the museum and thank the society for what it does in the community.

Portman took time to visit with society members and view the art work that was being auctioned off as a fundraiser after the dinner. Twelve paintings, including a painting of the socidety’s Highland House Museum and log cabin, along with a small quilt, were auctioned. A different full-sized quilt was raffled off over the past few months with Michelle Parrott being announced as the winner. The quilt was handmade by Jeanette Knauff to raise funds for the society. Robert Kroeger, an artist from the Cincinnati area, painted the Highland County barns and shared the proceeds from the auction with the historical society.

There was also a civil war re-enactor at the log cabin to talk to visitors about the history of the Civil War.

The historical society wants to thank Donald Owens for offering that educational activity for the evening.
