Lady ‘Stangs take 40-point win

The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs started the game ahead by 30 points and finished it with a 40-point lead, trotting off with an 83-43 home win against Peebles High School Monday night.

Lynchburg ran away with 6 points in the first minute of play with two 2-pointers from McKayla Binkley and a 2-point shot from Peyton Scott. Binkley and Scott ended up leading scoring for the Lady Mustangs with 26 points and 24 points, respectively.

Binkley shot two 3-pointers in 42 seconds in the first quarter, and kept the heat coming until the clock ran out. Scott, Hannah Binkley and Zoe Fittro took the Mustangs to a 30-point lead at the end of the first quarter with 37-7 on the scoreboard.

Peebles fought back with a 10-point run in the first two and a half minutes of the second quarter, but the Mustangs pulled it together all too soon, holding the Indians at a 16-point gain for the quarter while scoring 16 for themselves and maintaining the lead. Peebles finished off the quarter with a 1-point conversion after Scott made a 3-point shot at 30 seconds.

By the half, the score favored the Mustangs’ 30-point lead at 53-23.

The Indians lost their momentum in the third quarter, struggling against the Mustangs’ pressure while McKayla Binkley ran away with scoring. Lynchburg took advantage of Peebles’ skid, taking their lead to 43 points by the end of the quarter at 75-32.

The final quarter saw Logan Binkley score 6 of the Mustangs’ 8 points for the quarter. Despite an 11-point gain for Peebles, the Mustangs had done their work and finished the game at a clean 83-43, continuing their undefeated record (3-0, 6-0).

“Our press really starts the momentum for us. We did that really well today,” said head coach Whitney Lewis. “We played with good intensity. I thought we came out in the second half and kept with that same intensity. We were able to run through some of our offensive sets there at the end, and I thought we executed very well. We like to play at a quick pace, and sometimes we have to slow it down and run through stuff. I thought we did a good job of that today.”

The Lady Mustangs will travel to Mowrystown Thursday night to challenge the Whiteoak Lady Wildcats (0-4, 0-3) at 7:30 p.m.
