The Hillsboro High School Indians girls team took a loss Wednesday night at home against the Washington High School Lady Blue Lions despite Kaley Burns’ shooting in the second half.
Hillsboro made a 9-point gain in the first quarter to WHS’ 15 points, struggling to shoot against the Lions’ defense.
Madi Marsh shot four points in 15 seconds in the second quarter, but the Indians only put up a total of 6 points while Court House shot 25.
By the half, things weren’t looking good for Hillsboro with 40-15 on the scoreboard.
Hillsboro’s Natalie Sullivan started off the second half with a layup in the first 30 seconds of play, bringing the score to 40-17 right off the bat, and Kaley Burns followed up two minutes later with another 2-point shot. Burns put up 7 of the Indians’ 12 points for the quarter, but WHS topped them with an 18-point gain that took the third-quarter score to 58-27.
Sydney Bobbitt and Kaley and Kelsey Burns made a combined 10-point gain in the fourth quarter, but WHS’ Breanna Taylor alone put up 11 points for Court House. The Blue Lions scored 15 points in the final quarter, finishing off the Indians at 73-37 when the clock ran out.
Taylor led scoring for WHS with 14 points for the game.
Burns was the top scorer for Hillsboro with 15 points.
“Kaley Burns did a nice job in the second half putting the ball in the basket,” said Hillsboro head coach JR Moberly. “The kids continue to compete, but we didn’t make good decisions with the basketball and that has to improve. We need to take our shooting practice more seriously and see if we can make some shots. We make some of those and it’s not a 25-point game at half time.”
“I’m extremely proud of the girls,” said WHS head coach Samantha Leach. “They came out ready to go from the tipoff and they played hard through the end of the game. Very proud. I think that tonight we played together as a team, we shared the ball. Everyone contributed, they did their part, and we played extremely well on the defensive end.”
