Mustangs dominate in weekend play

The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs scored two conference wins over the weekend, defeating the West Union Dragons on Friday and the Fairfield Lions on Saturday, according to information provided by LC head coach Matt Carson.

On Friday, the Mustangs played host to the West Union Dragons, posting a 78-56 win.

The Mustangs outscored the Dragons 19-15 in the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Mustangs go on an offensive surge, which was highlighted by a thunderous dunk from junior Eric McLaughlin. In the quarter, the Mustangs outscored the Dragons 25-10 to take a 44-25 advantage into the locker room.

The Mustangs outscored the Dragons 17-10 in the third quarter, then West Union kicked their scoring up a notch to 17-21 for the final period.

The Mustangs had four players reach double figures, and nine score overall. The Mustangs were led by Eric McLaughlin, who had 21 points on the evening. Joe Giordano had 17 points, followed by Brian Lampkin with 13. Austin Hilt added 11 points, followed by Michael Heindel and AJ Stroop, who each scored 4. Isaiah Jones and Damin Pierson each scored three, followed by Zach Miller with 2.

Mustangs outrun Fairfield 67-62

On Saturday, the Mustangs traveled to Leesburg to take on the Fairfield Lions in SHAC play. A near-capacity crowd in Grandle gymnasium saw a great battle of two division-leading teams in the conference. The first quarter saw the Mustangs jump ahead at 18-14, followed by a close 15-14 second quarter to take a 33-30 lead into halftime.

Fairfield’s defense clamped down in the third quarter, but the Mustangs held their lead at 45-41 by the buzzer. Both teams opened up scoring in the fourth quarter, with LC barely outscoring Fairfield at 22-21.

The final score read 67-62 with Lynchburg-Clay on top.

“I thought our kids battled for four quarters tonight and gave a good effort defensively,” Carson said. “Credit Fairfield, they took us out of our game in the first half. This was a great road test for us; they are a very good team who will win a lot more games this season.”

For the Mustangs, Eric McLaughlin led with 23 points, followed by Joe Giordano with 22. Michael Heindel added ten points, followed by Brian Lampkin with nine. AJ Stroop added two points, while Austin Hilt added one.

The Lions had three players reach double figures, led by Jensen Dalton and Cody Gragg, who each scored 18. Jesse Current added 17 points, followed by Wyatt Evans with 3.

Klay Walker, Tucker Ayres, and Mason Cain each chipped in 2 points in the contest.

Lynchburg-Clay improves to 9-3, 6-1 on the year.

Fairfield falls to 8-4, 5-1 on the year.
