A sweet First Friday

The Hillsboro Uptown Business Association is preparing for its first First Friday event of the year and it’s a sweet one that’s less than a month away. The third annual HUBA Chocolate Walk will be held April 7 with 12 businesses participating.

The walk starts at 5 p.m. and runs until around 8 p.m.

“Each location will have its own chocolate delicacies they prepare for the evening and some will have wine, or champagne punch, or fruit punch,” HUBA President Joe Mahan said. “Everyone is at their leisure to walk from host location to host location and hopefully some of the locations will be offering specials to induce people to buy local.”

Tickets are $10 each and are limited to 250.

All the host locations for the self-guided walk are in the 100 block of High or Main streets or on Governor Foraker and Governor Trimble places.

“It’s pretty much like a square so you can pick a starting place and pretty much finish back where you started,” Mahan said.

The participating businesses are Rome Jewelers, Uptown Community Room, Rustic Willow Primitives, Highland County Visitors Bureau, Appearances Salon, Olde Cellar, Slow N Low Barbecue, Bon Appetit Gourmet Shoppe & Gifts, Cundiff’s Flowers & Gifts, TwentyFour eXchange, Davis Law Office and Image-n-That Photography.

HUBA generally holds First Friday events on the first Friday of each month from April through the end of the year, plus several events in between.

On Saturday, April 15 it will host its second annual Easter egg hunt on the former Hillsboro High School location on West Main Street. Mahan said many of the details are still be worked out and will be announced later.

He said the May First Friday event will center around a cruise-in with vehicles parked around the Highland County Courthouse. He said it will also be a “ladies night out” event, but many of those details are still being worked out, too.

Mahan said he’s hoping for a big crowd for the Chocolate Walk.

“We’ve never sold out, and the second year was better than the first, so maybe the third one will be the one that sells out,” Mahan said.
