Lunch With Easter Bunny is April 8

When the mother of a special needs child told Linda Allen more than two decades ago that it would be nice if someone could hold an Easter egg hunt where her son could find an egg, it didn’t take Linda Allen long to make it happen.

Supplemental Assistance to the Handicapped’s (SATH) annual Lunch With The Easter Bunny will take place this year from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8 at the Hopewell Center, 5350 New Market Rd.

“It’s not a big money maker for us, it’s mostly just a program for the kids,” said Allen, SATH’s longtime executive director. “It’s open to all kids and we invite everyone, but it’s very difficult for a kid in a wheelchair to compete in a normal Easter egg hunt, so we cater to them a little.”

There will be lunch, the egg hunt that starts at 12:30 p.m. and has four different age groups, Easter crafts, egg decorating, and each kid gets their photo taken with the Easter bunny.

The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children.

Lunch is served buffet style and Allen said those attending can go back to the line as many times as they want. There will be homemade pulled pork, cole slaw, egg salad, chips, cookies, hot dogs, cheese chunks, fresh fruit, jello squares, pudding, apple sauce and drinks.

“We know a lot of the people eating are going to be little so we plan the food toward things like little finger foods that are easy for them to handle, and add some things for the adults,” Allen said.

Kids that will be hunting eggs are asked to bring a basket to keep them in.

“We usually have a couple thousand eggs, so everyone gets a lot of eggs,” Allen said.

To make a reservation, contact Allen at 937-366-6657 (daytime) or Mary Kamphaus at 937-393-8550 (evenings). The deadline to register is April 6. Reservations can also be made online at

“We just invite people to come out and join us, and any proceeds we make help special needs kids,” Allen said. “A lot of people just come out to eat and watch the kids.”
