Lynchburg-Clay falls in the regional finals to Grandview Heights 2-1 in double overtime

Lynchburg-Clay High School’s Lady Mustangs soccer team traveled to Waverly on Saturday to take on the Grandview Heights Lady Bobcats in the D III region 11 regional final match.

Grandview Heights beat the Lady Mustangs by a final score of 2-1 in double overtime to put an end to Lynchburg-Clay’s season one win short of the state tournament.

The Lady Mustangs fell behind 1-0 to the Lady Bobcats at the 25:03 mark of the first half.

Both teams locked in defensively for the remained of the second half as goalies for both teams made excellent saves to maintain the 1-0 score heading into the half.

Lynchburg-Clay tied it at 1-1 when Peyton Scott netted a goal at the 22:11 mark of the second half.

With the score tied at one the defense for both teams dialed in and prevented the game winning goal from being scored in regulation.

Lady Mustangs head coach Dennis West said, “We had several opportunities in regulation and overtime to win the game but we were unable to convert.”

The first overtime period saw the Lady Mustangs get two consecutive shots on goal from Bell that were both stopped by the Grandview Heights goal keeper.

Grandview Heights won the game in the second overtime when they netted the winning goal with 7:30 to play.

The loss denied the Lady Mustangs the opportunity to defend their 2016 regional championship.

“It will probably take a few days to get over that loss,” said West. “We played Grandview Heights two out of the last three years and the score was 2-1 both times.”

West also commented on the experience of coaching the boys and girls this year, “It has been great to coach this group this year. Both the boys and the girls were excellent this year. The girls were really willing to do what was necessary to be successful. The game Saturday was an excellent opportunity for the girls to show what kind of character they had and I am really proud of them this season.”
