Lynchburg-Clay girls basketball preview

The Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs will open their season on November 28 when they travel to Miami Trace High School to take on the Lady Panthers.

Whitney Lewis is the head coach of the Lady Mustangs squad that features a young core of athletes and two seniors.

The two seniors on the squad, Abby Blankenship and Emily Pinkerton, have been in the Lady Mustangs program for four years.

“We are returning several players that saw varsity minutes last year. Our two seniors have been with our program for four years and understand what it takes to win,” said Lewis.

Lewis also expects the team to lean on the leadership of junior Peyton Scott, “Lewis said, “We return our leading scorer from last year in Peyton Scott. She had a very successful season last year, and I look for her to really step up for us this and help lead our team to a successful season.”

The Lady Mustangs advanced to the the regional finals in the 2016-2017 season where they fell to Southern Hills Athletic Conference (SHAC) rivals the Eastern Lady Warriors 46-42.

Scott was the leading scorer for the Lady Mustangs in the regional final loss with 19 points and is expected to carry a larger portion of the offense for Lynchburg this season.

Lynchburg-Clay will be seeking redemption against the Lady Warriors on January 22 when they host Eastern Brown in a key SHAC matchup.

The Lady Mustangs will be undersized compared to much of their competition but Lewis expects her team to play cohesively to account for the size differential.

“I think our strength this season will lie in how well we play together. We are a small group with our tallest player listed at 5’10. We will have to work together to play teams that may be bigger than us. I think that will only get better as we move throughout the season,” said Lewis.
