Choir performs for board

Several fifth-graders who performed last weekend in the Ohio Music Education Association District 16 performance in Chillicothe entertained the Greenfield Board of Education Monday evening with three songs that were a part of their six-song concert on Saturday.

Made up of 20 students from the Greenfield Exempted Village School District, the kids had to audition to become a part of the choir, and since being chosen have put a lot of time in practicing including recess time and after school time, according to Buckskin Elementary Principal Mike Shumate.

The performance in Chillicothe comprised 169 students from six counties, Shumate said at Wednesday’s school board meeting prior to the choral performance.

“I think it was quite an honor,” he told the choir students, “and you represented us very well.”

The choir was led by music teacher Victoria Mikkelsen.

In other business, superintendent Joe Wills said the administration is looking into creating a network of McClain alumni and community members to connect with current students as the latter make plans for a future after graduation.

Wills said the idea is to have alumni and community members not only come in to the school and speak to students, but also to be contacts for students who seek information on a particular profession.

In other meeting matters, items on the consent agenda approved by board members included accepting the resignation of assistant high school principal Dr. Ted Ely at the end of the school year for retirement purposes, accepting the resignation of bus driver Carol Holt, and approving the appointment of law firm Bricker and Eckler as general legal counsel for the district.

Employment recommendations as approved by board members are: Nathan Cook, mechanic helper; Tyler Jones, bus driver; Debbie Burgess, cafeteria; Richard Castle, certified substitute; Shira Wise, cafeteria aide/monitor; Linda McGraw, bus driver; Morgan Faulconer, student cafeteria worker; Jacob Orr-Zody, girls seventh grade basketball; and Jennifer Highley, assistant basketball cheerleading ninth grade.

The Greenfield Exempted Village School District Board of Education is scheduled to meet next in regular session on Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. at the central office boardroom. The meeting is open to the public.
