Greenfield school holds special board meeting

The resignation of one coach was approved and the employment of another coach was accepted during a special meeting Monday of the Greenfield Exempted Village Schools Board of Education.

Jeremy Andrews, who has been the McClain head football coach the past three season, released a statement announcing his resignation last week. The board officially approved the resignation by a unanimous vote at Monday’s meeting.

“This decision was solely based on wanting to watch my son’s games at Wilmington,” Andrews said in his prepared statement. “When I took the job in 2015, he had never played football. I, therefore, did not foresee any schedule conflicts. However, he first played as an eighth grader last year. I was able to make it to most of his games in 2016. This past year, however, he played on the high school team and I, obviously, missed just about everything. It was very difficult for my family and me.”

The Tigers went 0-10 this past season and have won just three of 30 games in Andrews’ three seasons at McClain.

“This decision has nothing to do with our struggles this past year or our critics. I do not want any of our critics to take any satisfaction in thinking that they had anything to do with this decision,” Andrews’ statement said.

Greenfield Superintendent Joe Wills said Tuesday that the school district would begin the process of publicly posting information that it is looking for a new coach in the next few weeks. He said the district would like to have a new coach hired before the spring so planning for next season can get underway. He said the position would be open to anyone meeting the qualifications, but that there may be some people within the school district interested in the job.

Andrews thanked several staff members in his statement for working to make sure the program had everything it needed to be successful and said he plans to remain in Greenfield as a teacher.

“I also want to thank the Greenfield/McClain community for their support of me and the program,” the statement said. “This is a special place, and I will certainly miss being their coach.”

The board also unanimously approved the hiring of McClain graduate Marcus Coleman as the assistant girls basketball coach for the 2017-18 season.

Wills said the board and the administration was aware that Coleman was already serving as a girls coach, but that the board had not formally hired him until Monday.

The superintendent said Coleman was a middle school boys basketball coach last year and helped with the junior high football program this fall.

No other action was taken or any other matters discussed during the meeting, Wills said.
