Hillsboro Garden Club President Nancy Baldwin called the Nov. 28 club meeting to order with members standing for the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a rendition of “God Bless America,” and then “Happy Birthday,” directed to member Ed Davis.

Roll call showed 13 members present, seven absent and no guests.

The roll call question was “What is your seasonal front door décor?”

The gardening tip is to give spades and shovels a quick spray of silicone lubricant. This will allow the dirt to slide right off.

Opening the business meeting, the club commenced with the reading of the October meeting minutes. Treasurer Ruth Anna Duff gave her report.

During the Flora and Curiosity section of the meeting, Nancy Baldwin displayed a sample of Aglaomema, better known as Chinese Evergreen. There are 21 species of this plant, which is toxic to cats.

Nancy also informed the members Jan. 10 is House Plant Appreciation Day.

Larry Moore presented his original arrangement, “Fire and Ice,” which incorporated painted spray foam and dried alliums. It had placed second at the Knollwood Flower Show.

Darlene Eicher passed around a wreath of dried sweet gum balls.

Ruth Anna Duff distributed extra photos from the publicity book.

Andrea Schneider, Nancy Sonner and Ruth Anna Duff reported on their decorating a tree at the Highland House.

Larry and Judy Moore decorated the Native American tree at Deer Creek Park.

The Christmas party will be Dec. 5 at the Ponderosa restaurant.

The March 2018 Hillsboro Garden Club meeting will be dedicated to finalizing the spring District 16 convention in May, and the June 2018 meeting will be dedicated to preparing for the state convention.

The 2018 state convention of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs will be held June 25-27 and the theme is to be, “Gardening through the Seasons.”

There was no old or new business to be brought forward although an address correction was presented.

Carol Gorby gave an interactive program on feeding birds in winter. Members were quizzed as to what birds they saw in their yards, what they fed the birds, and if they did so all year-round or only in winter.

The members also had the opportunity fill a mug with a mixture of melted suet and bird seed. The mugs will be hung outside to serve as bird feeders.

After the meeting was adjourned, refreshments were served by hostesses Ruth Anna Duff and Nancy Baldwin.

As the November meeting is the final regular meeting, the Hillsboro Garden Club will next convene March 27 at Floral Hall.
