Hillsboro Cub Scout Pack 37 recently held its annual Pinewood Derby at Restoration Acres.
To prepare for the race, scouts start with a seven-inch block of wood and wheels. Design choice, weight placement and basic engineering concepts are all factors for scouts to consider when creating their cars. The races are so close that sometimes the difference between first and second place is within a hundredth of a second.
Trophies were awarded to the following scouts that finished in first, second and third place, respectively, for each den. Tiger Den: Blake Walters, Elijah Lewis, Mason Rinal; Wolf Den: Kainen Allen, Sam Hunt, Sam Martin; Bear Den: Xavier Lowe, Charles Stewart, Justin Craig; Webelos Den: Cooper Swope, Liam Tener, Christian Ahrmann; Arrow of Light Den: Logan Zurface, Nick McClure, Austin Richards.
Overall first, second and third place winners in the pack were Cooper Swope, Logan Zurface and Liam Tener
Scouts and family members of scouts could enter an open class race with cars they built. This is also known as the “outlaw” race. The three with the fastest cars were Daryl Ahrmann, Cody Richards and Chris Zurface. In the den leaders race the winners were Don Tener, Corey Richards and Abe Martin.
Pack 37 wishes to thank all of those who helped to make this event possible including Person to Person Ministries, Bear Mechanical, Tener Trash Removal, Old Y Restaurant, Herdman’s Pole Barns, Fender Realty, Roman Family Healthcare and the First United Methodist Church of Hillsboro.
