A Hillsboro man was injured Thursday morning after the vehicle he was driving clipped a parked vehicle and rolled over on Walnut Street in Hillsboro.

Ralph Michael, 87, Hillsboro, was driving a Toyota RAV4 westbound on West Walnut Street at 10:37 a.m. when the vehicle drifted to the right side of the road, clipped the left back end of a parked 2008 Subaru Impreza owned by Steve O’Connor, 29, of Hillsboro, with the right front part of the Toyota, causing the vehicle to roll over onto its top, according to the Hillsboro Police Department.

The Toyota came to a rest in the middle of West Walnut Street near South Elm Street.

Michael was transported by the Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District to Highland District Hospital.

He was cited for failure to maintain reasonable control.

The police department said weather conditions did not have anything to do with the accident, but both the Highland County Sheriff’s Office and Wilmington Ohio State Highway Patrol Post said they were kept busy with early morning accidents due to slick road conditions and black ice.

The sheriff’s office said it took reports of five or six accidents, but all the injuries from them were minor. A spokesperson said he was sure there were more accidents that were not reported to the sheriff’s office.

“I think it was black ice. It snowed, melted, then froze,” the spokesperson said.

The state patrol said it did not investigate any accidents in Highland County.

“We got some calls asking if we were available, but we didn’t send anyone down there due to multiple crashes in Clinton County,” an OSP spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said there were no serious accidents in Clinton County and that most of them were related to vehicles sliding off the road due to icy conditions and “a lot of black ice.”

But there were serious accidents elsewhere is southwestern Ohio.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said two people were killed in a chain reaction crash Thursday morning that shut down northbound Interstate 75 in Butler County’s West Chester Township, about 23 miles north of Cincinnati.

The Butler County Coroner’s office arrived on scene and the victims were identified as Rodney J. Bartleson Jr., 34, of Cincinnati, and Marvin Eugene Hunter, 43, of Cincinnati.

Accidents caused lane closures in the southbound lanes of the interstate as well.

Roads were being described Thursday morning as sheets of ice.

The Dayton Daily News reported there were closures of roads, freeway ramps and interstates throughout the region.

The state patrol said a passenger in a semi-trailer that collided with another semi early Thursday during whiteout conditions on I-75 died. That accident occurred near Tipp City, 15 miles north of Dayton.
