The Aug. 28 meeting of the Hillsboro Garden Club began with a thorough cleaning of the Floral Hall at the Highland County Fairgrounds in Hillsboro in anticipation of the fair that runs Sept. 1-8.

After enjoying a well-deserved snack provided by Fran Larkin and Mary Smith, the business meeting was called to order by President Nancy Baldwin. Roll call showed 14 members present, seven absent and one guest. The gardening tip was: compost is always in season – use eggshells, veggie clippings, shredded newspapers, coffee grounds and cotton fibers — no meat products.

The reading of the August minutes was skipped. The new carpeting, lights and wall paint were admired. Thanks to all who worked on these upgrades. A sign-up sheet to volunteer at the fair was passed around.

As Ruth Anna was not present, there was no treasurer’s report. Carol Gorby reported on her attending the E & J school. She found it to be very educational in learning how to show flowers and use them in arrangements.

Old Business: The Regional 16 Fall convention will be held Oct. 11 at the Arts & Crafts Building at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in Washington C.H.

New business: Carol brought attention to Faye Mahaffey’s gardening column in The County Shopper.

The meeting was then adjourned.

The next meeting will held Sept. 25 in Floral Hall at the Highland County Fairgrounds. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. The program will be the fall auction. Dues will be due.
