Senior center will host Halloween Health, Info Expo

In a break from recent tradition, the Highland County Senior Citizens Center will not hold its annual Halloween party and haunted house this year and instead will host a free Healthy Halloween Senior Health & Information Expo on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

So far, 21 local businesses have signed up to take part in the expo and more are welcome, according to Mechell Frost, executive director of the senior center.

The expo will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by bingo. Frost said the expo’s purpose is to provide information on what senior health services are available locally.

“Local exhibitors and businesses will set up with information booths, they will all have giveaways and prizes, we’ve invited them to dress up in Halloween costumes, and the guests will judge which one is their favorite,” Frost said. “We want to give information on what is available in our community, and have a good time doing it.”

There will be live music, the Highland County Senior Citizen of the Year will be recognized, there will be free blood sugar and blood pressure checks, bingo with the winners claiming prizes donated by the businesses, raffles, and lunch will be available for purchase. The Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District will be doing hands-on demonstrations of how to put out a pan fire, and Laurel Oaks cosmetology students will offer free hair styling and manicures.

There will be a costume contest for the visitors, too, but Frost said guests are not required to dress up. The first, second and third place winners in the costume contest will win Frisch’s pies.

All guests will receive a raffle ticket when they enter the expo, and they will receive an additional raffle ticket for each roll of paper towels they bring to the event.

“We’re going to be giving stuff away all day long,” Frost said.

The expo is a fundraiser for the senior center with each of the exhibitors or businesses paying a fee to set up a booth. Frost said all exhibitors or businesses are also asked to supply two prizes — one for bingo and one for the raffle.

“It’s just going to be a lot of fun,” Frost said.

She said the senior center decided to forego the Halloween party/haunted house this year due to rising costs and difficulty setting up the haunted house.

The senior center is offering a membership special during October. With the purchase of a 2019 membership, those interested can also become a member for the remainder of this year for $5. Annual membership fees are $20 for those ages 50-89, $25 for anyone 21-49 and a lifetime membership is free to those 90 and older.
