Still working at 90 and no plans to quit

At 90 years old, Paul White still works most days, enjoys riding his motorcycle, and shows no signs of slowing down.

White’s family moved From Adams County to Greenfield when he was 10, and he has been living in the same house in Greenfield for 67 years.

“I do construction, and I work as much as I can,” said White. “I work about five days a week. I used to work seven days all the time away from home, but I gave that up about twenty-some years ago.”

Several years ago, he did his highest roofing job ever at 160 feet at a feed mill business in Jeffersonville. “They asked me about going up and putting a metal star on top of that building,” said White. “Another guy helped me, and we went up an elevator I think 110 feet, and we had to climb 50 feet to go up on top, and you could see clear into Court House.”

White owns a Kawasaki 900 Vulcan motorcycle that he loves to ride. “I’ve owned eight of them, so I know something about motorcycles,” he said. “I wouldn’t give that thing up for nothing, and I don’t have a bit of trouble riding.”

White’s son-in-law, Jim Edwards, said, “He drives his Chevy Equinox like a teenager.”

White attributes much of his good health to avoiding tobacco and alcohol. “I think the main thing for my part that has kept me healthy is I never smoked or drank in my life,” he said. “We raised tobacco for 30 years, and I’ve seen what that stuff does to your hands and stuff, and it ain’t for me.”

White was married to his wife, Betty, who passed away nearly 10 years ago. They had three daughters, Brenda, Diane and Donna; and a son, Paul. Brenda died 37 years ago from Rheumatic fever in the fifth grade. “They operated on her, but she didn’t pull through,” said White.

White still goes out for breakfast every Saturday, and he travels to Hawaii every year.

“The Lord takes care of me, and I appreciate that, and I ain’t about to quit,” he said. “If I couldn’t get out of this house and go, I wouldn’t last long. I like to get out and go, and I love to work. I enjoy working. If you like what you do, well, keep on doing it. That’s the way I feel.”
