A fatal shooting Saturday in Hillsboro claimed the life of a local man.

The Hillsboro Police Department said that at 2:39 p.m. Saturday it responded to a 911 call to 801 Treewood Drive, Apartment No. 6, on Northwest Street. Hillsboro Police Chief Eric Daniels said Monday in a news release that the exact nature of the call is being withheld at this time.

Upon officers’ arrival, it was determined that John W. Norris, a 53-year-old white male, had suffered a fatal gunshot wound.

A person of interest is in custody as a result of unrelated charges, but was not being identified as of Tuesday. Formal charges are pending prosecutorial review and further investigation, Daniels said.

The police department requested assistance from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and Bureau of Criminal Investigation for crime scene processing. The Highland County Prosecuting Attorney provided direct assistance during the preliminary investigation, Daniels said.

A spokesperson for the police department said Tuesday afternoon that no further information was available, including the hometown of the victim.

In the news release, Daniels said an additional media release will be provided upon the filing of formal criminal charges.
