Twenty-two-year-old Hillsboro resident Christian Mcconehea tried out for the Ohio Riders professional cornhole team during a two-day combine in Columbus in April and made the team in a competition of more than 50 players.

Mcconehea works at the Amazon warehouse in Wilmington and only started playing cornhole competitively in July. “The Porch started running tournaments down there every Thursday, so I started going there,” he said.

The Ohio Riders are one of six professional cornhole teams for the 2023 season within the new Major League Cornhole Organization. The team plays their home games at the Hollywood Casino in Dayton, and there are 14 games in the season.

Mcconehea is one of 14 players on the team. The other teams in the league are the Philadelphia Bell-Ringers, the New Jersey Heroes, the Buffalo Brawlers, the Florida Geckos, and the Kansas Airmen.

The team lost 21-9 in the inaugural game of the league against the Bell-Ringers in Philadelphia. They beat the Heroes 23-3 at their home opener last Saturday.

“We’re one and one so far, and we play in Buffalo this Saturday,” said Mcconehea. The games are not currently televised but can be viewed on livestream. We get a base salary based on if we are done with our singles, and the lowest anybody will make is $200 per game.

The team will play every Saturday throughout the summer until about August. Mcconehea said he enjoys traveling and seeing other parts of the country for the games. “I like the competition, and there are good people and good friends are made in cornhole,” he said.
