A Greenfield man was sentenced to multiple years of community control on theft charges recently in Highland County Common Pleas Court.

James Brown Jr., 43, was sentenced to five years of community control on one count of theft by deception, a fifth-degree felony.

Brown Jr. was ordered to pay restitution of $57.50 per month beginning on Feb. 7, 2024, totaling $3,450 to the victim through the Highland County Victim Witness Office. He was also ordered to comply with all of the conditions from case including completing the Star treatment program and aftercare, the latter delayed until he recovers from Star. He was ordered to have no contact with the victim.

The court also ordered that if Brown Jr. violates any of the community control sanctions, he would be given a prison sentence of between six and 12 months and ordered to pay a fine of $2,500.

If Brown Jr. is sentenced to prison, a period of supervision under conditions determined by the Adult Parole Authority after his release was found to be optional for this case. If he was given a prison sentence for a felony of the third degree that was not a felony of violence or a felony sex offense, or for a felony of the fourth or fifth degree, after his release, he would be subject to two years of post-release control supervision at the option of the Adult Parole Authority.

According to court documents, around June 27, 2023, and continuing through July 10, 2023, Brown Jr. obtained or exerted control over $3,450, by deception.
