Trout Fishing Day at Harmony Lake

A family Trout Fishing Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at Harmony Lake, located at Liberty Park in Hillsboro.

No registration is required, and all ages are welcome. However, anyone 16 years or older will be required to have an Ohio fishing license.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own poles and gear, but equipment will be available from the city for those who do not have it.

“It’s for the whole family getting together,” said Hillsboro City Parks Director Caleb Gregory. “We’re going to have lunch for the public like hot dogs, chips and water.”

The lake will be stocked with trout by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

The trout are stocked as part of a “put and take” program, meaning they are designed to be caught and removed quickly because they are cold-water fish.

“For me, it’s something people can do to get involved with the parks,” said Gregory. “I don’t know if a lot of people know about Harmony Lake and that area back there, so I want people to see the beautiful parks that we have at Harmony Lake in Liberty Park.”

Gregory said the city plans on hosting more events throughout the year at Hillsboro’s parks. “We’re looking at a couple more throughout the year at our parks to try to get more people at our parks and see what’s out there,” he said.

The city held a similar event in past years, but that was a few years ago.

The lake is located at the end of Diamond Drive, the road that runs past the Highland County YMCA. Going north on Diamond Drive, visitors will come to a gate that is open from dawn to dusk seven days a week year-round. After passing through the gate, the road extends all the way back to the city reservoir. On the right is a large, mowed park available for picnics, Frisbee tossing, pickup soccer games, or even a little driving range-style golf practice. In the midst of the greenery is Harmony Lake, which is available for public fishing.
