Lynchburg-Clay Band Direction Paul McCalla said the Marching Mustangs delivered another outstanding performance last Thursday at the 2023 Findlay Market Opening Day Parade. It marked the second time the band was invited to participate in the annual event that makes its way through the streets of downtown Cincinnati.

The Marching Mustangs were one of 22 bands invited to join in the parade, making it a truly special event.

“Despite a chilly start, the sun was shining brightly, and the band was fully prepared after just over one month of rehearsals,” McCalla said. “The band members lined up in the heart of Findlay Market, surrounded by the sounds of other bands practicing nearby. As they marched down Race Street, the sight of thousands of people lining the parade route brought an exhilarating energy to the day, making it an unforgettable experience for everyone.”

McCalla said he was proud of his students’ hard work and dedication.

“We are so happy to have been a part of such a big Cincinnati tradition. The students had a great time at Findlay Market before the parade and made memories to last a lifetime,” McCalla said. “It was truly great to see teachers, administrators and community members all along the parade route making the experience that much better. I am proud of our students for not only performing well but representing our school and community so well during our trip to Cincinnati.”

Several people came together to make the parade a success for Lynchburg-Clay. The Lynchburg-Clay Music Boosters had shirts made and provided lunches for the band members. Delaware North donated the Reds hats worn during the parade which helped the Marching Mustangs stand out from the other bands.

McCalla said the school district continues to support the band and provide what is needed for them to make music.

“We here at Lynchburg-Clay Local School District are incredibly proud of Mr. McCalla and the members of the marching band program,” LC Superintendent Jack Fisher said. “They have had a tremendous school year. Being invited to participate in the Reds Opening Day Parade is an awesome privilege and one that is celebrated and applauded in our school district.”

The Marching Band consists of students from the Lynchburg Clay high school and middle school. The band is made up of: seven banner carriers, seven guards (flags), one drum major, four flutes, seven clarinets, seven saxophones (four alto, two tenor and one baritone), five trumpets, four trombones, one baritone, two tubas and seven percussionists (drummers).
