The Washington Lady Blue Lions found themselves in the lead against the McClain Lady Tigers Saturday night, 28-23, with six minutes to play in the game.

However, McClain was able to rally back to post a 42-35 victory.

The win keeps McClain in second place in the SCOL, just one game behind Miami Trace in the loss column. Miami Trace is 11-1 in the SCOL, McClain is 8-2.

Washington is now 6-10 overall, 3-8 in the SCOL.

Junior Taylor Polley was the game’s leading scorer for McClain with 16 points.

McClain freshman Maddy Stegbauer had 11 points and junior Beth Montgomery scored seven points.

For the Lady Lions, freshman Hannah Haithcock led with 14 points. Senior Wendy Hawk scored 11 and senior Jaycie McRoberts added five points.

“They played harder than us, in the first half, especially,” McClain head coach Jarrod Haines said. “I thought we did a better job of boxing out in the second half. We still missed a couple of assignments. They just played harder than us.”

Free throw shooting was off for both teams Saturday. McClain still arguably won the game at the line, making 18 of 34 for 53 percent, while Washington went 9 of 23 from the line for 39 percent.

McClain made four three-point field goals, while Washington had none.

“We did not shoot free throws well,” Haines said. “We got to the line; both teams did.

“They did a great job in that 1-3-1,” Haines said. “We just couldn’t get our kids to find what was open. When we did find what was open, we didn’t shoot the ball very well, especially inside the paint.

“But, you find ways to win,” Haines said. “They made us play ugly, which is a credit to them.”

McClain held a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

At the half, the Lady Tigers were on top, 19-14.

The first turnaround came in the third quarter as Washington outscored McClain, 10-4 to take a 24-23 lead into the final stanza.

McClain saved its best offense for the fourth quarter, with 19 points to 11 for Washington.

Washington was looking to extend its lead from 28-23, but the shots would not fall for the Lady Lions.

Meanwhile, McClain went on a 9-0 run to take a 32-28 lead with 3:40 left in the game.

The teams traded free throws (one each) to make it 33-29 with just under two minutes remaining.

The teams next each sank a pair of free throws to make it 35-31 with 1:49 to play.

McClain made one of its next four free throw attempts, leaving the door slightly ajar for Washington.

Hawk scored to cut the lead to 36-33 with 1:21 to play in the game.

After a free throw from Polley, Hawk went to the foul line for Washington. She missed both free throws, but hustled after the second miss, got the rebound and scored to make it 37-35 to 1:10 to play.

Those turned out to be the last points of the game for the Lady Lions.

Polley hit a bucket and McClain made three of its final four free throws to seal the 42-35 victory.

“Wendy probably had her best game of the year,” Washington assistant coach Jeff King said. “Hannah Haithcock had 14 points. Jaycie McRoberts and Alexis Gray played awfully well. Alexis probably led us in rebounding. She’s been one of our leading rebounders this season.”

It was Senior Night and Washington honored its three seniors, Alexis Gray, Wendy Hawk and Jaycie McRoberts, prior to the game.

Washington was at Ross Southeastern Monday night.

The Lady Lions have their final six games on the road prior to the tournament.

Washington is at Hillsboro Wednesday and at Clinton-Massie for a 12 p.m. j-v tip-off Saturday.

McClain hosts East Clinton Wednesday and Miami Trace Saturday.

McClain has a make-up game with Chillicothe Wednesday, Feb. 3.
