Relay For Life Kick Off

If you have ever wondered what Relay For Life is all about, Thursday evening is your chance to find out.

The Highland County Relay For Life 2016 Kick Off Party will be held starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hillsboro Church of Christ, 155 W. Walnut St. Entertainment, food and information will be provided.

“It will be the committee members with superhero capes on. Lots of whooping and excitement about the 2016 Relay,” Cindy Wilson, a event co-leader with Cheryl McGee, said of the entertainment. “Information will be any and everything anyone needs to know to start a new team. We will have all the forms for things such as fundraising, luminaries, registration, sponsorship. We will talk about the theme and teams will start letting us know what their campsite ideas and onsite fundraising will be.”

This year’s theme is “Super Heroes, Curing Cancer One Type at a Time.”

Anyone who has ever thought about starting a team is encouraged to attend the kick off event and bring their friends and family.

“Whether you’re a survivor, family member, friend, or neighbor, you have probably been touched by cancer. And we can all make a difference in the fight against this disease,” Wilson said.

She said that making a difference is as simple as signing up for the relay that will take place this year on Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25 at the Highland County Fairgrounds in Hillsboro.

The event normally starts on Friday evening and continues throughout the night until noon the next day. It is open to public. Teams sell food and set up all kinds of games to try to raise more money for the fight against cancer. There are usually some zany events to help the teams stay awake throughout the night, although that is not a requirement. Teams also hold various other fundraisers to raise money throughout the year.

A year ago, when 25 teams and 322 individuals participated, the Highland County event raised $100,043, far surpassing its original goal of $80,000.

The top three fundraising teams, in order of finish, for 2015 in the Family & Friends category were Cows for a Cure, Charlie’s Angels and Beat Cancer; in the corporate category they were NCB, Merchants National Bank and Hobert Helping Hands; and in the Small Business category they were Southern State Cancer Crusaders, Greenfield Adena Medical Center and Highland District Hospital.

“The dollars we raise help with lifesaving programs, services, and research efforts to end cancer,” Wilson said. “Join us and help finish the fight against cancer.”
