Lady Lions blank PV 2-0

It was a good old fashioned pitchers duel Wednesday night on the Fairfield High School softball diamond as the Lady Lions (3-1, 1-0) hosted the Lady Bearcats of Paint Valley.

On the mound for Fairfield was freshman Katelyn White who has already thrown two two hitter this season. On the opposite side of the field for Paint Valley, Mikayla Newland had two no hitter under her belt. Needless to say, if a team could get a run across the plate, they had a really good shot at winning. That team was Fairfield.

It was a back-and-forth battle between the two pitcher all the way up until the fourth inning. This is when Lady Lion White helped herself by blasting a line drive to right center that short hopped to the fence and White ended up on third base for the triple. The hit scored Kourtnie Smith who had singled to lead off the inning. The Fairfield girls got an insurance run when Casey Carter came to the plate and hit a ball in the infield, but was not caught by the first baseman for an error, which allowed Megan Gragg, pinch running for White, to score from third base for the second run of the inning.

In the remaining two at-bats for the Lady Lions, they were unable to score again, but White struck out six of the nine batters she faced in the remaining three innings and her defense did the rest, leading to a 2-0 defeat of the Lady Bearcats by Fairfield.

“Kate White has been crushing the ball,” said Lady Lions Head Coach Mark Dettwiller after the win. “We were fortunate enough to get someone on base in front of her and she laced one out there and one hopped the fence. She’s just a raw talented athletic kid that loves the game. She’s also improving every game she goes out. I think she’s getting used to her teammates and more comfortable as the season goes along.

“We had freshman at the pitcher’s mound, third base, and first base and they were getting to the bunts tonight but not exactly fielding them the way we wanted to. That will get better for sure. We’re young but these girls are really coming along.”

White finished the game with 15 strikeouts and allowed no runs on five hits. She also led the team at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Also collecting hits for Fairfield were Grace Larrick (1-for-3), and Kourtnie Smith (1-for-3). Casey Carter also had an RBI.

The Lady Lions will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to East Clinton for an 11 a.m. start time.
