Thirty senior student-athletes have been nominated by their coaches for the 2016 Times-Gazette Highland County Scholar-Athlete Award.

They all will be recognized and will receive an award at a dinner banquet set for 6 p.m. Thursday, June 23 at the Ponderosa Banquet Center in Hillsboro, where the overall winner will be announced and will receive a $200 scholarship.

Each varsity coach in Highland County was offered the chance to nominate one student-athlete for the award for each sport they coach. The nominees must have lettered in at least one sport during their senior year and carry at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

The winner is selected based on their athletic and academic accomplishments, as well as community service.

The banquet, where this year’s Highland County Athletic Hall of Fame inductees will also be honored, is open to the public. The student-athletes, the coaches who nominated them, and the hall of fame inductees are the guests of The Times-Gazette. Tickets for anyone else are $16 each. For coaches who for some reason may not have been aware of the opportunity to nominate someone, the deadline for doing so has been extended to Tuesday, June 14. Nomination forms can be picked up at The Times-Gazette offices at 108 Gov. Trimble Place, Hillsboro, or can be emailed to coaches upon request.
