Woodmen, Legion help VA home

Modern Woodmen of America teamed up withMowrystown American Legion Post 694 to help raise funds in November for expenses for the Ohio Veterans Home in Georgetown. Funds raised through this project totaled m ore than $2543.

New Year’s Christian concert

The community is invited to a New Year’s Day concert featuring contemporary Christian musical artist Chris Mulpas at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1 at the Bainbridge Church of Christ. Mulpas is an evangelist from Centerburg who travels the country, proclaiming the good news through song and sermon. He incorporates contemporary music and gospel music to encourage the Lord’s churches and challenges everyone to obey Christ as Savior and Lord. November is Family Caregiver Month

National Family Caregiver Month is celebrated each year in November and is a time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country. It offers an opportunity to raise awareness of caregiving issues, educate communities and increase support for caregivers.

Conquering diabetes in Highland County

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Shala Shupert, public health nurse at the Highland County Health Department, said that, “The number of Highland County residents living with diabetes is higher than both the national and state averages. Hemoglobin A1C and fingerstick blood glucose readings are great ways to detect diabetes and prediabetes or see how well controlled your diabetes is.”

Merchants National Bank purchased a $500 sponsorship supporting the Hillsboro DECA program. The sponsorship helps Hillsboro DECA with numerous costs such as leadership conferences, membership costs and competitions.

The Mowrystown FFA competed in the Ohio Animal Management online test and the Ohio Animal Behavior and Welfare online quiz.

Garden meets a Floral Hall

The Hillsboro Garden Club met Tuesday at the Kathryn Zane Granger Floral Hall on the Highland County Fairgrounds in Hillsboro. After president Judith Stivender called the meeting to order, all present stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and then sang “God Bless America” led by Ed Davis.

County avian team competes at NAILE

The Ohio 4-H State Avian and Poultry teams from Highland recently traveled to the North American International Livestock Exposition to compete in several contests. The teams consisted of Sydney Hamilton, Wesley Kelch, coach Diane Waits, Sam Hamilton and Sara Newsome. Youth participated in individual and team events, showcasing their hard work in preparation. The teams placed third for Avian Bowl, fourth for Market Eggs and seventh Overall Judging. Individual awards were received for the following: Sydney Hamilton, 17th individual overall; and Sara Newsome, seventh individual for market eggs.
