McClain FFA team 2nd in state

The Agricultural Issues Forum Leadership Development Event connects students with industry professionals as they research, present and understand complicated issues in the agricultural world. Students are required to make a portfolio, answer questions regarding their agricultural presentation and present to local professionals their topic. Members of the team placed second in the state qualifying them to compete at The Big E, located in West Springfield, Massachusetts later this year.

SSSC awards Study Abroad Scholarships

In partnership with EF Study Abroad, Southern State will be traveling to the British Isles — England, Ireland and Wales — May 16-26. Among the travelers are five students who have been awarded the inaugural study abroad scholarship from the Sara M. Barrere Memorial Trust Scholarship Fund, made possible through the college’s foundation.

McConnaughey graduates UM

Hayley R. McConnaughey of Lynchburg received her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Marshall University last weekend. On Friday evening, the members of the 2024 Class received their hoods at a ceremony with friends and family in attendance. Following Friday’s events, they were presented with their doctorate degrees. McConnaughey received her bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2021 and completed her graduate degree in April 2024. She was a 2017 graduate of Lynchburg-Clay High School and is the daughter of Chad and Becky McConnaughey of Lynchburg, and the granddaughter of Kenny and Jana Wells of Lynchburg. Her paternal grandparents were the late Steve and Beverly McConnaughey of Buford. She has accepted a position in Charleston, West Virginia with Generations Physical Therapy. “I am very excited to put all of the knowledge I have accumulated in college to use and assist people with their health and well-being,” said McConnaughey.

The McClain FFA Livestock Judging Team took second place at the state level. The Livestock Evaluation Career Development Event challenges FFA members to recognize quality production animals. At the state level, students are tasked with completing market and breed genetics activities and giving oral reasons on sets of production animals. The McClain FFA also placed second overall in oral reasons. Cade Sponcil was the third overall individual and also the third overall individual in the reasons category. Olivia Stegbauer placed 10th overall for reasons. This team will represent Ohio FFA at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado this upcoming year. Hillsboro kindergarten registration

Children living in the Hillsboro City School District who be 5 years of age on or before Aug. 1, 2024, are eligible to enroll in kindergarten. Children who will be 6 years of age on or before Aug. 1, 2024, must be enrolled in school under Ohio law.

Hillsboro FFA helps radiothon

Hillsboro FFA member Addy Knauff attended the Highland County Society for Children and Adults Radio Telethon last month on behalf of the Hillsboro FFA Chapter. The chapter donated a total of $250. ¨It felt good to be a small part of giving back to the community that has given us so much support over the years,” Knauff said. “It was an honor to be a part of this event.” Pictured (r-l) are Blair Guard, Hillsboro Middle School representative; Miles Fouch, Hillsboro Middle School representative; and Knauff.

Merchants Bank donates to Hillsboro FFA

Merchant’s Bank recently supported the Hillsboro FFA Chapter for Agricultural Awareness Week in numerous ways. First, donated some agriculture-related puzzles and activities for the members to participate in. They also donated gift cards to go to the winners of each activity and delivered cookies for all of the Hillsboro FFA Chapter. Lastly, the Hillsboro FFA Chapter hosted its annual awards ceremony last month where Merchant’s Bank recognized senior FFA members for excellent record keeping and donated money for the Banker’s Award. The Ohio Educational Service Center Association (OESCA) recognized Ohio’s top students from across the state on April 15 during the 35th annual Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Awards Program held at the Nationwide Hotel and Conference Center in Lewis Center following the OESCA’s annual spring meeting.

Lynchburg-Clay team wins Envirothon

The Area 5 Soil and Water Conservation District held its annual Envirothon on April 23 at Camp Oyo in New Portsmouth, Ohio. The competition is designed to stimulate, reinforce and enhance interest in the environment and natural resources among high school students.
